Cary Ginell
“Carefully Taught: American History Through Broadway Musicals”
(Note: This talk will be presented via Zoom which may be viewed either in Parish Hall or remotely)
Since the nineteenth century, the Broadway musical has been one of the many ways in which Americans explore, reconstruct, and revise their understanding of national identity and history. In his presentation, Cary Ginell discusses the various ways Broadway has treated U.S. history through a century of Broadway musicals. In his award-winning book Carefully Taught: American History Through Broadway Musicals, Ginell chose 40 musicals that dealt with a variety of history-based topics and eras, from Tony Award-winning shows of inestimable significance (Ragtime, Assassins, and 1776) to overlooked and failed productions like The Scottsboro Boys, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and Teddy and Alice. Along with his analysis of the shows, Ginell will also feature cast album recordings and scenes from a selected number of musicals covered in his book.
Cary Ginell is a Grammy-nominated author of 16 books on American music. A winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award, he has worked as a discographer, lecturer, as well co-owning the Origin Jazz Library record label. Since 1996, Ginell has worked as a theatre and entertainment critic for BroadwayWorld.com and The Acorn newspaper chain in Ventura County, California. In addition to Carefully Taught, his other Broadway-related books include the best-selling Broadway Musicals: Show By Show and his latest book, Watch Your Frazolagy! A Lexicon of Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man."
Our next speaker, on March 19, will be U.S. Congressman Jim Himes, Representative for Connecticut’s 4th District, with “Report from Washington, D.C.”
