Mianus Fishway Open House Fri 5/23 3-5:00PM

                                                    

Twenty to forty thousand marine species migrate across the Mianus pond dam each year via the fishway (ladder).  Alewives, herring, eels and many other species need to travel to fresh water to complete their reproductive cycle. This act replenishes our oceans with life. The migration happens mostly in the spring and fall.  

The fishway will be open to the public on Friday, May 23 from 3:00 to 5:00PM EST. Attendees will see an open gate to the right of The River House through which they can enter.  Members of the town Conservation Commission and volunteers will be on hand to guide you.  You will walk the short path leading to ramps that are part of the apparatus.  Hopefully you will see fish coming up the ladder and have the opportunity to net and release them.  You will also see the electronic equipment used to count the fish making the trip. 

There are about 4,000 dams in Connecticut. Only about 40 have ladders. This ladder is one of the most active and this will hopefully be an active day. Bring your family and friends and particularly children to see and hear why this is important. 

In the event of rain the event will be postponed for safety reasons.  The decision to postpone will be made that day.  A notice of the new date will be posted on the gate.
