Benn Steil, PhD

“The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War”

A recent survey of over 350 American historians by the Council on Foreign Relations identified the Marshall Plan as the best foreign-policy decision in U.S. history. Benn Steil’s book The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War, the New York Historical Society’s 2019 book of the year, explains in lively narrative what the plan set out to do in the tumultuous years following World War II, what it achieved, and its lessons for foreign policy today.

Benn Steil is senior fellow and director of international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He is the lead writer of the Council’s economics blog, and also writes a monthly column for The Dispatch. Prior to his joining the Council in 1999, Dr. Steil was director of the International Economics Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. He came to the Institute in 1992 from Oxford, where he received his MPhil and DPhil in economics. He also holds a BSc in economics summa cum laude from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Steil has written and spoken widely on international finance, monetary policy, financial markets, and economic and diplomatic history, and has testified before the U.S. Senate and House. His most recent book is The World That Wasn’t: Henry Wallace and the Fate of the American Century. Prior award-winning books include The Battle of Bretton Woods: John Maynard Keynes, Harry Dexter White, and the Making of a New World Order, and Money, Markets, and Sovereignty.

Our next presentation, on December 9, is by Bob and Bill Blake, New York Harbor Pilots, “Being Harbor Pilots in One of the World’s Busiest Ports”
