About Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo
As Connecticut’s only accredited zoo, Beardsley Zoo sits on 181 acres of parkland originally designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. First opened in 1922 with exotic bird donations from local residents and retired animals from the Barnum & Bailey Circus, the non-profit zoo is now home to over 500 animals.
Highlights include a red panda cub, Chinese goral, Amur leopard, Andean condor, red wolf, giant anteater, golden lion tamarin, and a historic carousel featuring 30 hand-carved animals. None of the animals were captured in the wild—they are either rescued or part of accredited zoo conservation exchanges.
