“A 400-Mile Source to Sea Exploration of the Connecticut River”
With hundreds of access points and over 50 primitive campsites, the Connecticut River offers a unique paddling experience through the heart of New England. The Connecticut River Paddlers’ Trail connects primitive campsites and river access points from its headwaters in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods south to Long Island Sound, supported by a network of organizations. With consistently navigable waters, few portages or difficult rapids, a rich cultural history, and a varied natural landscape, the Connecticut River is a wonderful introduction to canoe camping adventures. This presentation will cover Joe Roman’s 400-mile source to sea paddle of the Paddlers’ Trail in 2025, and illuminate the many recreational opportunities along the river and the family of partnerships that make such an experience possible. Joe Roman is the Backcountry Resource Manager for the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). He oversees the 19 campsites in the White Mountains along with the Ridge Runner program in Southern New England and the AMC managed sites along the Connecticut River Padders Trail in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Joe and the AMC have recently begun to take over the management of the entire CT Paddlers Trail from source to sea. Joe also oversees the AMC’s Search and Rescue operations in the White Mountains of NH. Joe has worked for the AMC for over 10 years starting as a caretaker at the Guyot campsites in 2012.
