Larry Kantor

“Prospects for the US Economy and Financial Markets”

Since early last year we have experienced the biggest increase in tariffs in our lifetimes, a sharp drop in immigration and a war with Iran that has generated a surge in energy prices. These are all negative supply shocks, which raise prices and reduce output. Inflation has increased, but the economy has held up surprisingly well because we are in the midst of the biggest investment boom in US history. Companies feel that investing in AI is necessary for future success and in many cases even survival. This spending boom is lifting domestic demand, while also adding to the upward pressure on prices from higher tariffs and the war. It is also driving strong growth in corporate profits, reflected in rising stock prices. The increases in inflation and debt issuance to finance large government budget deficits and the surge in investment spending is also pushing up interest rates. We seem to be in the early stages of a bubble that will burst at some point, but probably not anytime soon since spending on AI shows no sign of slowing down.

Join us to hear Larry Kantor, who will draw on his many years as a senior leader in the financial industry to tackle the critical economic issues of the day. Larry has appeared on ten previous occasions before the RMA and has received widespread praise for his clear, concise, and comprehensible views on national issues from an economist’s perspective. Larry is currently an operating partner at Atlas Merchant Capital, a private equity firm. He was a 2016 advanced Leadership Institute fellow at Harvard University following his retirement as managing director and global head of research at Barclays. He was also a member of the investment bank executive committee. Prior to working at Barclays, Larry held several positions of increasing responsibility in academia, at the Federal Reserve Board and in the financial industry. Larry received his PhD and MA in Economics from Ohio State University.

Our next presentation, on October 21, is by author Karen Elliott House, on “The Man Who Would Be King: Mohammed Bin Salman and the Transformation of Saudi Arabia.
