“We Are All on the Journey: Highlights from a Solo Sailing Voyage Around the World”
In this enthralling presentation, Brechin Morgan will describe a four-and-a-half-year single-handed sailing voyage around the world. Brec has given many lectures and slide shows about this life-changing adventure to captivated audiences at yacht clubs, schools, art galleries, and libraries. It is illustrated by photos and his award winning nautical artwork which is shown in galleries throughout New England.
Brec was born in New London and spent summers of his childhood roaming the beaches in Waterford. At sixteen he left school to live and work in the bohemian atmosphere of Greenwich Village. He hitch-hiked across the US and Mexico riding 1,000 miles through the southwest in railroad boxcars. He crewed in the Virgin Islands, sailing to Martinique. Returning to Connecticut, he studied painting and after art school, to support a growing family, he opened a sign company in South Norwalk, painting many large outdoor murals and billboards.
In 1998 Brec fulfilled a lifelong dream sailing alone around the world on his 27 foot cutter Otter. Starting from Block Island, he sailed 32,000 miles and visited 32 countries, returning to Block Island and becoming the 232nd solo circumnavigator since Joshua Slocum. It earned him the Golden Circle Award from the Joshua Slocum Society, and a Circumnavigators Pennant from the Cruising Club of America.
Brech subsequently set up a studio in Bridgeport where much of his painting has been drawn from the eighteen sketchbooks he filled during the voyage and more recently from summer cruises along the New England coast. He continues to give stirring talks about his Adventure of a Lifetime. From his departure on a bitter cold windy November night, to his triumphal arrival back on Block Island, he was always… voyaging home.
Our next presentation, on August 19, is by Mike Moran, President and CEO of the Palace Theatre, Stamford, “The Palace Theatre: A Century of Stories.”
