William Baker, PhD.

“Leading with Kindness”

In their book “Leading with Kindness: How Good People Consistently Get Superior Results,” William F. Baker and Michael O'Malley argue that kindness, defined by traits like compassion, integrity, gratitude, authenticity, humility, and humor, is a powerful leadership tool for success. They provide practical advice for leaders to motivate employees, foster growth, and build strong organizations by applying these principles, emphasizing that true kindness involves setting clear expectations and guiding people through failure, not shielding them from it.

Key themes and concepts include kindness as strength, a strategic advantage, essential for building trust, loyalty, and commitment in the workplace, in contrast with the "corporate callousness" too often seen; the core virtues of compassion, integrity, gratitude, authenticity, humility, and humor, and ways to build them; real-world examples, showing how to apply these traits to motivate teams, recognize talent, create supportive environments, and adapt to change; combining kindness with accountability, stressing that kind leadership isn't about being "nice" or avoiding tough situations, it's about being truthful and guiding employees to learn from mistakes; and the benefits for organizations implementing these principles, leading to better employee engagement, organizational health, and the development of future leaders.

Dr. William Baker is an author, filmmaker, professor, and long-time media executive. He is a seven times Emmy Award winning producer, twenty year president of the PBS flagship station, WNET in New York and previously president of Westinghouse Television for a decade. He launched many cable networks and helped start Oprah’s talk show career. Baker has written five books and produced two theatrical movies. He’s believed to be the eighth person to stand on the North and South Poles.

Our next presentation, on July 22, is by Hon. Jed Rakoff, Judge, US. District Court for the Southern District of New York, “Grading My Boss: A Federal Judge’s Evaluation of the Supreme Court’s Recent Decisions”
