Rob Volpe

“’Tell Me More About That’: Solving the Empathy Crisis One Conversation at a Time”

We are living through an empathy crisis. You can feel it in the way political conversations end friendships, social media turns disagreement into contempt, and algorithms reward outrage over nuance. The result is a society that is more polarized, more reactive, and less able to see across differences than at any point in recent memory. We know empathy matters. We're just not very good at it. Yet the solution is something every one of us was born with the ability to use.

In this presentation Rob Volpe draws on real human interactions, documented during his years as a professional researcher. Empathy, it turns out, is a skill you can build. Showcasing vivid, real-life conversations from his book, Rob brings the Five Steps to Empathy to life in a way that is practical and deeply human — from a young woman with narcolepsy who upended every assumption, to a man in Indianapolis whose story of homelessness quietly changed how Rob moved through his own city.

This talk is not about being soft, or changing your beliefs. It is about being effective — as a colleague, a partner, a neighbor, or a leader. Because the most powerful thing you can say to another person is also the simplest: Tell me more about that.

Rob Volpe is the Founder/CEO of Empathy Activist and the founder of insights and strategy firm, Ignite 360. Award-winning author of the book Tell Me More About That: Solving the Empathy Crisis One Conversation at a Time, Rob creates training, coaching and consulting programs that drive results for organizations through the strategic use of empathy. In his bi-weekly newsletter Rob explores the intersection of human connection, empathy and current events. A regular contributor for Entrepreneur as well as lifestyle TV programs across the US, Rob frequently speaks on the topic at conferences, colleges, podcasts and with the media. He is a graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and lives in San Francisco.

Our next presentation, on June 24, is Michael F. Batcheller, author, “Forging the Triple Crown: The Early History of Horse Racing’s Signature Series, 1918-1948”
